Integrated Media Arts | M.A.

Program Overview

This M.A. in Integrated Media Arts is an opportunity for advanced work in visual media arts. The program is mentorship based, emphasizing close learning, and working relationship between faculty and students. The program’s interdisciplinary approach promotes an expansive, process oriented, combining image, object, and communication. We are committed to integrating traditional, and emerging practices, grounded in new media. Working with a wide range of artists, designers, and thinkers, students will learn to conceptualize, create, and produce new works integrating lens and light arts, media arts, and communications. The culmination of the program is an Integrated Media Art exhibition and Thesis Document.

This program is designed for a  year of advanced study for all art or design undergraduates or the media professional, for an expansive year of study. It provides advance work, integrating visual media, communication, and emerging media technologies.

This program is designed for a  year of study for all art or design undergraduates or the media professional, for an expansive year of study. It provides advance work, integrating visual media, communication, and emerging media technologies.

Selected Industries/Employment settings for M.A. in Integrated Media Arts graduates:

  • Advertising and Marketing Organizations
  • Arts Organizations
  • Studios (independent, commercial, industrial)
  • Galleries
  • Film/TV Production Companies
  • Museums
  • University/Colleges/Schools
  • Event Production Companies

Additionally, this program will prepare students for further study, to pursue M.F.A in Integrated Media Arts, Digital Media, Media Arts, and other related media terminal degree programs.

The program would be offered as a traditional, two 15-week terms, + exhibition

Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will demonstrate an understanding of the practical, theoretical, and creative aspects of a variety of media.
  • Students will produce projects which reflect advanced research, analysis, and practice.
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to correctly use terminology and specialized vocabulary relevant to the discipline and learn to communicate about the visual experience, art methods and concepts in critiques and discussions.
  • Students will apply individual visual and verbal perspectives to projects through writing, research, and content development.
  • Students will demonstrate through class participation and the completion of assignments advanced skills in creative problem solving and critical thinking.

M.A. Application and Art Portfolio Guidelines and Requirements

Must have an undergraduate degree: B.A., B.S., or B.F.A. degree in fields of art, media art, graphic/communication design, video, photography, film, animation, new media, or other related degrees in associated fields of study.

Additional requirements:

  • 400–500-word essay discussing your goals and objectives for pursuing this degree program.
  • Official Transcripts from all previous U.S. colleges attended or course evaluations of any foreign transcripts.
  • Professional Resume or CV
  • Two letters of recommendations

Portfolio of your work:

  • 20+ representative works, all media accepted
  • All works should be accompanied by a document listing the title, medium, size, time-based length, and date.

Digital media portfolios and portfolios submitted using the form must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Images: individual .jpg files titled with your name and image number, 2MB maximum size
  • Include: size, media, and date of completion
  • Video or Time Based Performances: Quick Time or .mpg

Physical portfolios and digital media are accepted as well. If you wish to present a physical portfolio or schedule an appointment to meet with Darrell Matsumoto, Director of Art & Design please email dmatsumoto@annamaria.edu. Self-Design Program Outcomes

  • Identify and describe the historical and cultural context of art and design
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of technologies and equipment applicable to their area(s) of specialization
  • Demonstrate perceptual acuity, conceptual understanding, and the technical facility at a professional entry level in their chosen field(s). The ability to perceptively analyze works of art and design and to critically evaluate its quality
  • Demonstrate functional competence with principles of visual organization, including the ability to work with visual elements and its application in drawing, two-dimensions and three-dimensions, color theory, and digital arts
  • Work independently on a variety of art and design projects. The ability to conceptualize, research, and produce an independent project. Produce a capstone exhibition and portfolio

Art and Design Minors

Students interested in Art and Design who major in another field may minor in art. An Art/Design minor may be of particular interest to all majors who wish to engage in a creative endeavor, or the major who may find art and design skills an asset for a career in marketing, advertising, or public relations. A portfolio presentation of basic artistic skills is required to declare a minor in art.
