Enyeneama “Emy” Udofia, a dedicated Health Science lecturer, has been teaching at Anna Maria for over a decade. Her passion for science is not just something she shares in a classroom, but an interest she instilled in her daughter, Mfoniso.

Mfoniso was recently nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series for her work as the co-executive producer for Apple TV+’s Lessons in Chemistry. Emy had the great honor of attending the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards with her daughter and has proudly shared her once in a lifetime experience.

How were the Emmys? Can you describe your experience? Did you meet any fun celebrities?

The Emmys were unforgettable! Watching the awards on TV is one thing, but being there in person was an entirely different experience. My daughter, Mfoniso, works for Apple TV, so they took excellent care of us. We arrived a day early and stayed at the Waldorf Astoria. The night before the event, my daughter and I went through our outfits. We each brought options, and then we finalized our choices with the right jewelry. The following day, we had our makeup done and headed out. We walked the red carpet before the show and saw many celebrities, including John Oliver! The ceremony was held at the Paramount Theater, where I enjoyed seeing hosts Eugene and Dan Levy. I also saw Reba McEntire and Sofia Vergara from The Voice!  Afterward, we attended the Governors Ball, where my daughter networked. From there, we headed to the Apple TV after-party. There, Mfoniso had a great conversation with Idris Elba about work, TV, film writing, and upcoming projects.

What was your daughter nominated for?

I am so incredibly proud of my daughter. She was nominated along with the writer-producer staff of Lessons in Chemistry for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. She is the co-executive producer for the show on Apple TV+. Although the show didn’t win, it has received significant acclaim, including nominations from the WGA Awards and the Producers Guild Awards.

What was your favorite moment at the awards ceremony?

One of my favorite moments was hearing the motivational speeches from the winners. Richard Gadd, who won an Emmy for Baby Reindeer, spoke about the importance of perseverance and continuing to strive despite challenges. Another highlight was being on the red carpet and having my daughter point out all the famous people!

As a Professor in Health Science and considering your daughter’s nomination for Lessons in Chemistry, it seems a love for science runs in your family. Can you describe why you both have a passion for this field?

I teach Anatomy and Physiology, which involves studying the structure and function of the human body.  Understanding chemistry is essential in my field, as it relates to the biochemical reactions that keep us alive. My daughter shared this passion for science growing up—she excelled in science competitions and initially seemed destined to be a scientist. Although she later pursued a career in writing, she channels her love for science into her work, making it accessible and engaging for others.

How do you think students could benefit from your experience at the Emmy’s or your daughter’s work?

The Emmy’s and my daughter’s achievements highlight the importance of hard work in addition to talent. Talent alone isn’t enough; it’s the dedication and effort that truly elevates one’s career. My daughter’s success is a testament to this, and I encourage my students to combine their talents with hard work. I always remind them that success is attainable through perseverance and effort. It might take time, but hard work is always rewarded!
