The Master of Education (M.Ed.)
This program is for individuals who are looking for a Master of Education with initial licensure. The program includes a foundation of philosophical, psychological, social, and moral influences on schools; examination of National and State Curriculum Standards; application of innovative instructional practices; and the integration of reflection and inquiry into teaching practice. The Master of Education teacher preparation programs are approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) for Initial teacher licensure:

• Early Childhood
• Elementary (1 to 6)
• Moderate Disabilities (Pre-K to 2)
• Moderate Disabilities (Pre-K to 8)
• Moderate Disabilities (5 to 12)

5th Year Pathway

Accelerated Master of Education (M.Ed.)

The Accelerated M.Ed. program provides a fast-track (4+1) graduate degree pathway for undergraduate students. Students complete courses required for subject matter knowledge in their first and second year at Anna Maria College, begin Education coursework in their third year, and complete pre-practicum field experiences in their senior year. They complete their bachelor’s degree in a major of their choice, with a minor in Education, and enter into the M.Ed. program for their 5th year. The 5th year includes six courses, two of which would be the student teaching Practicum and Seminar.

The 5th Year program is a cost savings for students with 6 of the 12 courses required for the M.Ed. programs completed at the undergraduate level.

Building Your Career

Master of Education for Professional Growth
Individuals who already have achieved initial licensure and want to expand their understanding of teaching and learning or add a license can develop and enhance their teaching practice to prepare for further inquiry in education may consider exploring the opportunities of a Master of Education in one of the following areas:

• Early Childhood
• Elementary (1 to 6)
• Moderate Disabilities (Pre-K to 2)
• Moderate Disabilities (Pre-K to 8 or 5 to 12)

Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS)
Individuals who have achieved a Master of Education degree and wish to broaden their knowledge and skills may consider a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS). It is a self-designed program with a concentration of at least 4 courses in English Language Arts/Reading, 4 courses related to Moderate Disabilities, or a concentration of choice determined through academic advisement. Students are encouraged to select courses that will benefit personal and professional growth. Contact the program director for additional information.

Master of Education with Kodály Music Emphasis
Music Educators can earn a Master of Education with Kodály Music Emphasis by taking 3 summers (18 Graduate Credits) of the Kodály Music Certificate courses and applying those credits to Anna Maria College’s Master Degree in Education.

Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) with Kodály Music Emphasis
Individuals who have achieved a Master of Education degree and wish to broaden their knowledge and skills may consider a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS).  Students are encouraged to select courses that will benefit personal and professional growth.

Our goal is to cultivate educators who are supportive colleagues, maintain a high level of competence and integrity in their teaching practices, use feedback to improve their performance, embrace the diversity of their students, and ultimately serve as positive adult role models in their school community. Through coursework and real and relevant application, students will prepare for Initial Teacher Licensure as approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).

Students will:

• Demonstrate sound subject matter knowledge and make real world connections to deliver effective instruction that meets the needs of all learners.
• Analyze assessment data and feedback to adjust practice, differentiate, and create equitable and improved learning experiences.
• Create learning opportunities that enable students to take academic risks within an inclusive environment.
• Implement strategies to support and engage all students including multilingual learners.
• Reflect on instruction and personal biases to improve practice for all learners.
• Adapt curriculum to differentiate instruction and allow all students to fully engage in learning.
