Kelvin AntwiSarpong ‘27 has been immersed in TV and radio production in Ghana since his early teens. His passion for storytelling and interviewing has led to diverse experiences, from hosting award shows like the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs) and scriptwriting to running his own radio show. Kelvin dreams big: owning a marketing firm, running a restaurant, and becoming a renowned media personality in America are his top priorities. At Anna Maria College, he is honing his craft through a Communications degree and valuable internships as he prepares to make his mark in the industry.

Kelvin first heard about Anna Maria College from several friends and his sister. The nearby City of Worcester has the largest population of Ghanian immigrants in the state making the community well-known in Ghana. When Kelvin was deciding on colleges, he knew that he wanted to study in the United States and experience the welcoming nature of Anna Maria that his friends talked about. Originally, Kelvin applied to Anna Maria College as a business student, but after taking a literature class, he reconnected with his love of writing. While trying to figure out his career path, Professor Travis Maruska suggested that he join the Communications program.

Kelvin decided to switch majors to pursue his passion but was nervous to tell his parents. However, they were incredibly supportive. “My parents know my desire for communications. They know I have always been a great talker, writer, and media person. So, it was easy to convince them because they already knew my passion and were very understanding and supportive. So now I’m in a Communications class, and it’s exciting! I have an Introduction to Communications class, and I must say, I feel very good about changing majors.”

As a shy kid growing up in Ghana, Kelvin always looked up to great American media personalities like Oprah Winfrey and Ryan Seacrest. Through the Communications major, Kelvin combines his previous experiences with radio and television while learning new communications techniques and strategies. Communications underlines the success of every business meaning that the career possibilities are limitless, especially for a student like Kelvin who enjoys trying new things.

Right now, Kelvin is focused on gaining work experience and learning about marketing. Internships are an important, hands-on aspect of the Communications program. Kelvin’s first internship is currently assisting with the Anna Maria College Athletic department by covering the games, writing articles, and providing the game stats.

“My degree at Anna Maria is the first step in achieving my dreams. It is great to already have an internship opportunity right now. The internship and then being able to write a story for our college newspaper were big opportunities for me,” Kelvin explained.

Kelvin is happy with his experience at Anna Maria College and is looking forward to accomplishing his big Hollywood dreams.

“Applying to Anna Maria College was a great decision for me. The faculty have been so helpful, and the students are very nice. I have not encountered any form of negativity from professors. Everyone has been respectful to everyone’s culture and diversity, which was a very big decision factor for me,” Kelvin said, “I still stand firm in my desire to run a marketing firm and hopefully one day become a successful media personality in America!”
