Friday, December 6th marked an important milestone for Anna Maria’s Esports team who won the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) Division 4 for Overwatch 2.
Anna Maria entered the playoffs as the number 4 seed but defeated the number 5 seed which was Northern Virginia Community College, beating them 3-2. The team moved on to playing The College of William and Mary, who were the number 1 seed and the top contender. Anna Maria College beat William and Mary in a 3-2 game and moved onto the finals. During the finals, Anna Maria College faced off with the University of the Cumberlands, beating them 4-1 for the Division win.
Division 4 is the highest Esports division the school has ever played in across all titles, making this a special win for the team.
In addition to competing in their highest division yet, Anna Maria’s Esports team also overcame many obstacles, which demonstrates the team’s dedication. Out of the team of five who competed, only two players had ever played in collegiate esports. Additionally, one player had never even played Overwatch 2 competitively before joining the team! Ultimately, the team practiced hard and came together to secure their win.
“I’m incredibly proud of our team for overcoming roster changes and adversity to come out on top,” said Anna Maria’s Director of Esports, Andrew Ghataora. “Their hard work and willingness to step out of their comfort zones were key to achieving this victory.”
