Starting college is a time of major transition—a mix of excitement, challenge, and countless “firsts.” For the Class of 2029 at Anna Maria College, this journey marks their official entry into campus life, from living away from home to diving into academic, athletic, and extracurricular pursuits. Our series, “Life in the First Year Lane,” documents these pivotal experiences.

Dean of Students Drew Melendez sat down with Fire Science major Brianna Price ’29 to discuss her Fall 2026 semester. For Brianna, the initial shift from high school was difficult, but by embracing the Anna Maria College first-year student involvement scene, she found community, structure, and a deep connection to the Anna Maria family. Read on as she shares her advice on making friends, joining clubs like Photography Club and Latinos Unidos, and why putting yourself out there is the absolute best way to make the most of your college experience

How was the transition from high school to college?

At first it was difficult, I won’t lie. I already have trouble with change and don’t like deviating from my routines. This is my first time being away from home in a completely different state, so it took some time adjusting in that aspect alone. It was also interesting to have most of my classes end before noon and then be free the rest of the day.

At the end of Welcome Weekend, I started to make friends. They helped me join clubs and go to events. Having actual people that I could do things with helped me step out of my comfort zone and do more, like attend on-campus events and join clubs on campus.

I’ve seen you are involved with different clubs and organizations on campus. What made you want to get involved and how has it helped your experience at AMC?

I was heavily involved with sports and clubs at my high school, so I knew I had to keep myself busy in college too. While I might not be doing sports anymore, the clubs are perfect to stay active and engaged. With such a big transition my brain needed to stay occupied to not dwell too much on missing home. I feel like being in all these organizations has helped me to meet amazing people and become more connected with the AMC community. Right now, I’m involved with Photography Club, Latinos Unidos, Once Upon a Campus and Criminal Justice Club.

What has been your favorite event on campus so far?

That’s hard because I go to so many! I thought the Casino Night was a lot of fun, and going to Bingo Nights are also a hit. How could I forget the Salsa Competition! I loved the practices leading up to and then being able to dance in front of everyone and having the judges there was great. I got second place for the singles competition.

What advice would you give to new students attending Anna Maria?

My biggest piece of advice would be to get involved and put yourself out there. College is a lot of firsts, and you need to be willing to try all these new things. It’s the best way to make friends, build connections, and really make the most of your time here.
