On Tuesday November 19th, Anna Maria College had the pleasure of welcoming former Special Agent, Criminal Investigator, and Certified Fire Investigator for the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms in Boston (ATF), Wayne Miller. Special Agent Miller has been involved in numerous high-profile illegal firearms, bombing and arson cases. As a member of the ATF National Response Team, Miller responded to several major explosion and fire incidents.
A Veteran in the Field Educating the Next Generation
Throughout his 18-year public and private career, he examined more than 2,300 fire and explosion cases in more than 40 states as well as provided expert testimony in courts at both the federal and state level. Special Agent Miller has over 3,000 hours of training in several aspects of fire science and investigation, with studies in over 100 different training fires.
Anna Maria College’s Fire Science department, which is the largest bachelor’s degree program for Fire Science in the northeast, had the honor of hosting Special Agent Miller for a speech and an author’s panel about his memoir Burn Boston Burn. Miller’s book gives readers a perspective on Boston in the 1980s, specifically when a coordinated arson attack set hundreds of buildings ablaze, injured hundreds and caused millions in damage. The memoir tells the story of Miller and his team as they try to unravel and reveal a conspiracy of nine men who were determined to terrorize Boston.
A Strong Program, Curriculum, and Student Community
Anna Maria College’s Fire Science program prepares students to pursue careers in fire prevention, fire protection and emergency medical services. Anna Maria also offers a dual-track Fire Science/Paramedic program, preparing graduates to sit for the National Registry Paramedic Certification Exam. With real-world experiences given to students by Anna Maria faculty who worked in the field, as well as guests like Special Agent Miller, Fire Science is a highly sought-after course of study.
