EMT Program Certificate
Program Overview
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certificate Program at Anna Maria College prepares students to provide life-saving care as first responders in emergency medical situations. People’s lives often depend on the quick reaction and competent care of emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics. Incidents as varied as automobile accidents, heart attacks, slips and falls, childbirth, and gunshot wounds require immediate medical attention. EMTs and paramedics provide this vital service as they care for and transport the sick or injured to a medical facility. The EMT represents the first response of the emergency medical system. An EMT trained at this level is prepared to care for patients at the scene of an accident and while transporting patients by ambulance to the hospital under the direction of more highly trained medical personnel. The EMT has the emergency skills to assess a patient’s condition and manage respiratory, cardiac, and trauma emergencies.
All 50 States require EMTs and Paramedics to be licensed, but the levels and titles vary from State to State. This training course prepares the student for testing leading to national certification as a licensed Emergency Medical Technician. The course includes lecture and laboratory experiences. This training requires a minimum of 160 hours which meets the US Department of Transportation course of study with a grade minimum of 75. To be recommended for the national certification exam, students must have a course average of 77% and must successfully pass the final written and practical exams.
Anna Maria College has a 100% pass rate of our EMT students on the State Practical Exam and 95% pass rate on the written portion of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam.
