About the Fire and Health Sciences Programs of Study
To meet the demands of increasingly rapid development in science and technology, the School of Fire and Health Sciences offers a balanced program of disciplinary and comprehensive interdisciplinary studies. The disciplinary courses build a strong foundation in the sciences and integrate learning in the classroom with direct experience in the laboratories, on the Anna Maria College nature trails, and field exercises. Interdisciplinary courses help the student appreciate applications of science and technology in a social context. Advanced students in the School are also encouraged to develop their proficiencies through internships and directed studies in their areas of personal interest. Students who wish to pursue graduate or professional study in scientific and technological fields can complete the requisite course work through courses offered in the School of Fire and Health Sciences and the Colleges of the Worcester Consortium. Through the Fifth Year option at AMC, advanced students may also earn up to two courses in graduate credits.
Majors in the School of Fire and Health Sciences

This major is a flexible framework that prepares students to appreciate and promote a sustainable environment. Students gain the scientific and investigative knowledge needed to understand how human activities influence the environment. They also examine how the application of values, ethics and an interdisciplinary approach help shape solutions to environmental problems. Each student participates in project-based field experiences and internships to gain practical skills needed to be able to contribute as an environmental professional or as an informed citizen of the world.
Field Experience
Anna Maria College offers an environmental studies field experience that includes 10 days in Puerto Rico studying the ecology of the jungle and beach ecosystems. Student projects result in presentations to the AMC campus community once they return.
Career Preparation
Students in this major will be well prepared for entry level positions in state and federal agencies, in corporations, consulting, and in not-for-profit environmental organizations. Environmental studies majors may also go on to graduate study in a variety of fields.
Major/Minor Requirements
In addition to college-wide requirements, Environmental Studies majors take ten (10) required courses and four (4) elective courses. Students also may minor in Environmental Studies with the selection of six (6) courses drawn from certain areas of the curriculum used by Environmental Studies majors.{/showhide}

This major is designed for individuals who are employed or seeking employment in fields related to emergency services. This comprehensive program integrates liberal arts education and strong career preparation. The curriculum is operationally focused and reflects the knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined within the National Fire Academy and the Fire Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) Model Curriculum along with the Officer Development Handbook from the International Association of Fire Chiefs. Strong emphasis is placed on the dynamic aspects of public sector emergency services leadership and administration. The fire Science program is taught by experienced emergency services professionals, who are distinguished leaders and educators in emergency services.
Career Preparation
The goal of the program is to produce a well-rounded emergency services professional who has the necessary knowledge, training, and certifications to have a competitive edge in obtaining professional emergency service employment.

The Bachelor of Arts in Health Science combines a broad science literacy with emphasis on biology and chemistry, with knowledge of particular threats to human health from environmental, occupational, and life-style factors. This preparation builds understanding of the role in human health of communicable diseases, conditions of deprivation or excess, technological hazards, and societal stressors. The advanced student integrates this preparation with a study of individual and community strategies for protecting and enhancing human health.
Careers in Health Science
The Health Science major is the appropriate foundation for students who are planning on careers that require graduate study in the health field, such as pharmacy, (Anna Maria has an articulation agreement with the University of St. Joseph's School of Pharmacy in Hartford, Connecticut leading to the Doctor of Pharmacy degree in a 3+3 program); medical, dental, or veterinary school; or physician assistant programs. Students who anticipate graduate study in the health field are encouraged to add additional courses in mathematics and the sciences to meet the requirements of particular graduate programs. Health Science students work with their faculty advisor to plan their schedules to meet those standards.
Anna Maria graduates who have a degree in Health Science have been employed in a wide variety of areas such as biotechnology and research labs, health advocacy, and state agencies.
Major/Minor Requirements
Both a major and a minor in Health Science are offered at Anna Maria College. Students who pursue a minor in Health Science take six courses from the major (four required, plus two upper level electives).{/showhide}

The Nursing Program at Anna Maria College embodies the College's mission and the traditions of the Sisters of Saint Anne by creating a supportive learning environment for students from all backgrounds and beliefs. It is the mission of the Nursing Program to develop professional nurses with a strong foundation in liberal arts, moral and ethical values, and who are scholarly and committed to the art and science of nursing. Based on the principles of social justice, the Nursing Program facilitates students' ability to care for themselves and others as they advocate and provide for wholeness and healing through service to human kind.
The Nursing Program consists of two distinct programs: a traditional four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing for entry-level students, and an online RN to BSN Completion Program for Registered Nurses. Both programs are accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, Inc. and approved by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
Traditional four-year freshmen students are admitted directly in to the BS in Nursing major (BSN). The nursing curriculum is seamlessly designed to allow progression from basic sciences and humanities to courses in nursing. Nursing courses start in the Spring semester of the sophomore year, where concepts in professionalism, patient-centered care, and pathophysiology are introduced and clinical practice begins. As students advance in the program, coursework is designed to further develop nursing knowledge and respect for the cultural, political, economic and social issues affecting individuals' health across the lifespan. Students are given opportunities to practice in a variety of healthcare settings as they develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes for delivery of compassionate, safe and effective nursing care. Graduates of the BSN program are academically prepared to apply for eligibility as a candidate for the National Registered Nurse Licensure Exam (NCLEX-RN) in Massachusetts.
Requests for internal transfer into the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program by AMC candidates may be submitted to the student's academic advisor at the end of the Fall or Spring semester after final grades are posted. Forms can be obtained from the student's advisor. Requests will be reviewed for acceptance or denial by the Nursing Program Director and department faculty. External transfer students are evaluated on an individual basis and are accepted pending space availability in the program. {/showhide}
{showhide title="RN-BSN Online Program" changetitle="RN-BSN Online Program" mousetitleistitle=true closeonclick=true titleasspan=true}In recognition of the unique learning needs of working nurses with multiple responsibilities in an age of technological advancement, the RN to BSN Completion program is offered exclusively online. The contemporary RN to BSN online curriculum is designed to give Diploma and Associate Degree Nurses the foundation for advancing their professional nursing practice while giving credit for existing education and clinical expertise. Online RN to BSN courses are offered throughout the calendar year in 8 or 16 week segments. Most students can finish the program within 18 months; however, five years are allowed for completion of the curriculum if necessary.

Students who have a high school CGPA of 2.75 or higher may be admitted to the Paramedic Science major directly upon admission to the College. Students interested in this major should have taken a variety of science and mathematics courses in high school, such as biology, chemistry, anatomy, and algebra. Students who seek to transfer from another college and have earned at least 30 college credits with a CGPA of 2.75 or higher also may be admitted directly to the major.
Students who are interested in Paramedic Science, but do not meet these standards may apply for acceptance into the Paramedic Science major after earning at least 15 credits at AMC, including achieving a C+ or higher in at least two of the following courses: BIO 103, BIO 212, BIO 213, and CHM 110. Applications are a simple, one-page form. They are reviewed at the end of each semester, and students are notified of acceptance into the major before the start of the next semester.
Students who have earned an Associate Degree in Paramedic Science and are certified paramedics may pursue the B.S. in Paramedic Science at AMC if they have earned a CGPA of 2.75 or higher in their Associate Degree program at a regionally accredited institution, with a CGPA in their paramedic courses of 3.0 or higher.

Dean of the School of Fire and Health Sciences Prior to coming to AMC, Dr. Erickson completed 25 years as a private consultant to Federal and State governmental agencies and private corporations, lecturing throughout the United States and South East Asia on Environmental Impact Assessment, Occupational Health and Safety, and Emergency Planning and Response. A former Fulbright Scholar (Malaysian National Institute of Public Administration, Program for Development, Economics and Finance), he has served as Adjunct Professor at the University of Massachusetts, Clark University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and Quinsigamond Community College. He has also been a Research Associate at the Water Resources Research Center (University of Massachusetts), and the Biology Department of Clark University. Dr. Erickson is the author of five books on a variety of scientific/technical issues. |
